Our 10th Anniversary Photos in Florence and Tuscany

Seven years ago, we met Cristiano of Facibeni Fotografia, an Italian wedding photographer whose soft and romantic approach to photography captivated me. The end of 2015 was one of the hardest times of my life, with the unexpected loss of my stepdad and some other significant challenges. When we took this trip in April 2016, I was drowning in grief. We had planned to be in Italy for about 10 days before heading to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague.

Vienna was a trip I had hoped to take with my stepdad. As our days in Italy came to a close, my anxiety about the second half our trip grew. We contemplated staying in Florence, the city where I learned so much about myself when I studied abroad. It is a place where I grieved other losses, came to terms with parts of my identity, and learned to see the world differently. Our photo session with Cristiano was scheduled on one of our last nights in Florence.

Cristiano was so warm and kind, and we established rapport with him immediately. As we crossed Florence with him, we asked about his favorite places. Budapest, he answered without hesitation. He spoke of the beauty, the people, and what made him love it. His enthusiasm was contagious, and our hesitation disappeared.

We, too, fell in love with Budapest.

Fast forward 7 years later, and we decided to spend our 10th anniversary in Florence and Tuscany. While we had toyed with the idea of going somewhere new, we decided to spend places that we were special to us. We also wanted to spend it with some of the people who have our travels especially memorable. Tom had never traveled until our honeymoon, and we have a deep appreciation for the people who have helped open the world up to us. Naturally, Cristiano was on that list, and I reached out to ask if he would be willing to schedule an anniversary photo session with us again.

When I couldn’t choose between Tuscany and Florence, Tom recommended we do both. And, Cristiano was up for it. So – we have anniversary photos in Florence and Tuscany, and I couldn’t love them more if I tried. We left with a promise to visit his other favorite city and a promise not to wait another 7 years. Goodbye was an emotional moment for all of us.
